Emlyn grew up surrounded by wealth as the daughter of one of the city’s richest merchants. Her childhood was comfortable, carefully managed and filled with expectations about who she should become, whom she should know and how someone bearing the de Vries name ought to behave. Eventually, she decided she wanted a life that belonged to her rather than one arranged around the interests of her family.

She left that world behind and built a reputation of her own as an adventurer and fighter. Emlyn is headstrong, stubborn and fiercely protective of her independence, with a particular dislike of anyone who assumes wealth, rank or authority automatically deserves obedience. She has a soft spot for underdogs and is quick to step in when she sees someone being bullied, exploited or pushed around by people with more power than they do.

Note: Nothing is set in stone, these are only suggested and partial details because Aranthaen characters are simply canvases for DMs to make their own!

Her relationship with her father remains strained rather than entirely severed. Emlyn resents his attempts to shape her future and refuses to live as an extension of the de Vries name, yet neither can completely escape the fact that they are family. Their arguments tend to be spectacular, particularly when Saul offers help that Emlyn interprets as interference.

For all her insistence on independence, traces of her upbringing are difficult to hide. Her armour is old and visibly used, but anyone knowledgeable about such things can recognise the quality immediately. Her longsword is similarly understated, beautifully balanced and faintly enchanted – the kind of weapon most wandering adventurers could never casually afford. Emlyn does not flaunt any of it and would probably insist that owning expensive equipment is very different from accepting family money now.

She is a capable and experienced fighter who prefers direct solutions and has little patience for elaborate schemes when a problem can be confronted openly. That impulsiveness occasionally gets her into trouble, though her loyalty and courage make her a dependable companion once she has decided someone is worth standing beside.

Emlyn is tall and athletic, with mid-length glossy black hair, brown eyes and a scattering of freckles that gives her a younger appearance than her combat experience might suggest. She wears well-worn half plate over leather and carries a shield and +1 longsword. Both once displayed the de Vries family crest prominently; most of it has since been scraped away, though close inspection still reveals exactly where it used to be.
