Ferghail is captain of the Ironhearts Merchant Police Battalion in Lantear, an experienced soldier whose sense of duty is rooted as much in home as it is in uniform. He is dependable, practical and quietly proud of the life his service allows him to provide for his family.
He is devoted to his wife and their two young sons, speaking of them often enough that even soldiers who have never met them know something of their habits, mischief and ambitions. Ferghail carries himself like a man with somewhere important to return to at the end of every patrol, and that knowledge has shaped the way he approaches danger. He is brave, but not reckless; courageous, but never interested in throwing his life away for the appearance of heroism.
His pride in the Ironhearts is equally straightforward. Ferghail believes deeply in earning his keep honourably, protecting those placed in his care and taking responsibility for the decisions that come with command.

He has little patience for corruption, cruelty or officers who treat ordinary soldiers as expendable pieces on a board.
Among his men, Ferghail is respected less for speeches than for consistency. He knows their names, notices when equipment is failing, shares uncomfortable watches when circumstances demand it and expects the same standards from himself that he demands from everyone below him. Discipline matters, but so does bringing people home.
He builds friendships slowly through reliability, shared experience and mutual respect rather than ceremony or advantage. He is not easily dazzled by rank, wealth or magical ability, but he remembers those who stand beside others when things become difficult.
Away from duty, Ferghail is warmer than his weathered appearance initially suggests. Family has given him an endless reservoir of stories, complaints and quietly amused observations, and he is particularly sympathetic towards adventurers who are trying to build something lasting rather than merely chasing the next purse of coin.
Those who earn his trust will find Ferghail an unusually dependable ally. He does not make promises casually, because in his view a promise is simply another kind of debt — and an honourable person pays what they owe.
