The Haven is where wealthy Aranthaens go when privacy matters as much as comfort. From the street it is understated by Restaurant Quarter standards: dark stone, discreet lanterns and a polished entrance without gilded signs or shouting doormen. Inside, however, the restraint becomes its own form of luxury.
Boutique suites open onto private balconies, bathing chambers are kept continuously heated, and each guest is assigned a personal concierge capable of arranging almost anything the city can provide.
The Haven attracts nobles, senior merchants, diplomats, celebrated performers and others whose presence elsewhere might become a spectacle. Staff are trained to remember preferences, forget indiscretions and never acknowledge a guest outside the building unless addressed first.
Its true reputation, however, comes from what lies beyond the public rooms. Behind an unmarked set of doors is a private members’ club whose entertainments are never advertised and rarely described twice in quite the same way. Imported delicacies, private gaming rooms, musicians unavailable elsewhere, unusual baths, masked performances and stranger indulgences are all rumoured to exist within.
Membership is expensive, selective and deliberately opaque. Coin alone is not always enough.
For most Aranthaens, the Haven is fascinating precisely because nobody quite knows what happens there. For those who do know, discretion is part of what they are paying for.
Encounters
The Haven attracts people who value privacy, discretion and the ability to spend extraordinary sums without attracting unwanted attention. Its public rooms are quiet, its private rooms quieter still, and the most interesting encounters are often the ones everyone present is pretending not to notice. Roll d10 for possible encounters…
- A beautifully dressed guest arrives alone, gives no name at the desk and is immediately escorted upstairs by a senior concierge. Half the room watches without appearing to do so.
- Two members are conducting a very serious conversation over drinks in a secluded alcove. Neither raises their voice, but one eventually slides a small velvet pouch across the table and leaves without finishing their wine.
- A foreign noble has become fascinated by one of the Haven’s unusual bathing treatments and is attempting to purchase the entire apparatus, attendants included, for transport home.
- A masked guest emerges unexpectedly from the members’ rooms during daylight hours and freezes on seeing someone they clearly recognise in the public lounge. Both immediately pretend they have never met.
- A concierge discreetly approaches the party and asks whether they would be willing to deliver a sealed package elsewhere in the City Tier. The intended recipient cannot be seen entering the Haven under any circumstances.
- A wealthy merchant has hired a private gaming salon and is losing heavily to three impeccably mannered companions. One of them appears to be cheating, although proving it inside the Haven would require considerable tact.
- A famous actress is drinking alone on a balcony after abruptly leaving a private performance downstairs. She seems more angry than upset and is waiting for someone who is now very late.
- Several servants are quietly searching the corridors after an expensive piece of jewellery disappears from a guest suite. Nobody has called the Merchant Police yet, suggesting the owner would prefer the matter never become official.
- A private supper in one of the smaller salons has unexpectedly drawn together a diplomat, a senior merchant, an adventurer of some renown and a member of one of Aranthaes’ oldest families. Whatever is being discussed, the Haven staff have doubled the guards outside the door.
- In a small private salon, Harra Bombeck, one of Aranthaes’ greatest living bards, is performing for fewer than a dozen invited guests. There is no stage and no announcement: Harra simply sits with his lute beneath the low lamps, singing one of his dark, haunting songs of loss, mystery and Lady Bune. Conversation elsewhere in the room gradually dies away as even those who were not invited begin listening from a discreet distance. Those familiar with Harra may wonder whether Orilia Thorne is somewhere nearby.
