Among the merchant princes, temple financiers, private bankers, and contract-brokers of Aranthaes, few names carry the quiet weight of ‘The Lady Elowen.’

Elegant, poised, and almost impossible to unsettle, Elowen moves easily between the Church of the Mother and the wealthiest mercantile houses of the city. She is called upon when matters of money, inheritance, sacred debt, political risk, or private security become too sensitive for ordinary negotiators – and too dangerous for ordinary guards.

To most, she is a refined noblewoman of exceptional intellect and impeccable manners. To those who have seen what lies beneath her perfect composure, she is something else.

Special Abilities

Elemental Adept — Fire: Elowen’s fire spells ignore resistance to fire damage. When she rolls fire damage for a spell, she treats any 1 on a damage die as a 2.
Sculpt Spells: When Elowen casts an evocation spell that affects other creatures she can see, she can choose up to 6 creatures to automatically succeed on their saving throws against the spell and take no damage if they would normally take half damage.
Empowered Evocation: Elowen adds her Intelligence modifier to one damage roll of any wizard evocation spell she casts.
Overchannel: Once per day, when Elowen casts a wizard spell of 1st through 5th level that deals damage, she can deal maximum damage with that spell.
Dark One’s Blessing: When Elowen reduces a hostile creature to 0 hit points, she gains 19 temporary hit points.
Beguiling Influence: Elowen has proficiency in Deception and Persuasion.
Agonizing Blast: Elowen adds her Charisma modifier to the damage of each beam of her Eldritch Blast.
Blood-Chilling Revelation: Once per day, Elowen’s beautiful face shifts into something ancient, infernal, and impossibly cold. Each creature of her choice within 30 feet that can see her must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened of her for 1 minute. A frightened creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.
The Cleansing Fire: Once per day, Elowen can cast a 5th-level Fireball using Overchannel. The spell deals 65 fire damage on a failed Dexterity saving throw, or half as much on a successful one. Creatures protected by Sculpt Spells take no damage.

Note: Nothing is set in stone, these are only suggested and partial details because Aranthaen characters are simply canvases for DMs to make their own!

The Mareth family were once minor nobility, known less for land or armies than for contracts, ledgers, and the settlement of disputes between merchants and the Church. Elowen was raised among wax seals, legal clauses, trade agreements, and polite threats. Even as a child, she was brilliant, detached, and unsettlingly precise.

Her life changed when the Mareths uncovered a vast fraud involving merchants, tithe officers, and temple intermediaries. Sacred funds had been diverted, caravan losses falsified, and private security contracts manipulated for profit.

Before the evidence could reach a tribunal, the Mareth estate burned. The official account called it an accident.

Elowen survived because she had been working late in the city chambers. Her family, their holdings, and most of the evidence were gone by dawn. But Elowen remembered names, signatures, timings, phrases, debts, and lies.

She did not rage or beg for justice – she had other plans. Under Church sponsorship, Elowen entered arcane study and rose quickly, specialising in evocation, with an emphasis on fire.

Personality
Elowen is True Neutral. She believes civilisation survives through structure – contracts, obligations, consequences, and the enforcement of all three.

She will save lives without hesitation if doing so preserves order or protects those under her responsibility. She will also incinerate a threat without remorse if delay would risk a greater collapse.

Her manners are flawless, her humour dry, and her patience finite. She dislikes waste, panic, incompetence, and people who mistake wealth for intelligence.

Once Elowen has accepted responsibility for someone, however, she does not abandon them.

Appearance
Elowen is strikingly beautiful, with pale hair, composed features, and an unnerving stillness. When her hidden nature surfaces, she becomes ‘wrong’ – somehow inhuman – too ancient, too cold, and too perfectly aware. The change lasts only moments, but those who witness it rarely forget.

And when the inevitable flames have faded, Elowen merely adjusts her cloak and says: “Continue. We are behind schedule.”
