The Silver Fish is perhaps the most renowned restaurant in Aranthaes, a palatial temple to seafood where dining has long since ceased to be merely about eating. Its velvet seats, mirrored walls and crystal chandeliers provide the setting for some of the richest meals in the realm, served beneath ceilings painted with shoals of silver fish moving through an imagined blue-green sea.

Everything about the restaurant is intended to impress. The main dining room is vast without feeling crowded, broken into sweeping curves of tables, screened alcoves and raised galleries where the most desirable seats overlook the room below. Silverware is heavy, glassware impossibly thin, and fresh flowers arrive each morning in quantities sufficient to decorate a noble wedding. Even the air carries a carefully maintained mixture of citrus, sea salt, warm bread and whatever is currently being drawn from the kitchens.

At the centre of it all is Fenton, the halfling chef whose fame extends far beyond the Restaurant Quarter. Broad, energetic and seemingly incapable of entering a room quietly, he is known almost as much for his booming laugh as for his unmatched skill with a knife. Fenton treats cooking as equal parts craft, performance and warfare. He is notorious for shouting at suppliers, embracing satisfied customers and personally throwing inferior produce back into delivery carts.

His reputation rests largely on freshness. Fishing boats supplying the Silver Fish are expected to unload first-rate catches directly for the restaurant, while rarer ingredients arrive packed in ice from distant coasts or carried inland through magical preservation. Fenton maintains relationships with fishermen, merchants and ship captains across Aranthaes, and more than one visiting trader has discovered that securing the chef’s favour can be almost as valuable as securing a commercial contract.

The clientele is predominantly wealthy City Tier merchants, senior guild figures, successful adventurers, visiting dignitaries and those High Aranthaens willing to descend the hill for food considered genuinely exceptional. Tables can be difficult to obtain on important evenings, and being seen at the Silver Fish carries a certain social weight. Business agreements are made over oysters, marriage negotiations unfold behind velvet screens, and fortunes sometimes change hands before dessert arrives.

Yet the restaurant is not stiff. Fenton has little patience for excessive ceremony and has resisted repeated attempts to make the Silver Fish more exclusive. Proper dress is expected, but titles impress him less than appetite. A prosperous merchant celebrating a good year may find herself seated only a few tables from an ambassador, while an adventuring company fresh from a lucrative expedition can spend an alarming proportion of its treasure on a single extraordinary evening.

Behind the dining rooms lies an enormous and surprisingly chaotic kitchen complex: preparation rooms, cold stores, shellfish tanks, smoke rooms, wine cellars and a marble-floored fish hall where the day’s catches are inspected. Dozens of cooks, assistants, servers and porters work beneath Fenton’s direction, and the kitchens have become something of a training ground for ambitious chefs throughout the city.

For Aranthaes, the Silver Fish represents something more than luxury. It is a celebration of the city’s reach. Its tables gather food from distant seas, its cellars contain wines from foreign kingdoms, and its dining room brings merchants, nobles, travellers and adventurers together beneath the same glittering chandeliers. Few places demonstrate quite so effectively what Aranthaen wealth can purchase — or how enthusiastically the city intends to enjoy it.

Fish & Seafood

Traditional Aranthaen White Fish Sharing Platter
Delicate boneless pieces of fresh white fish roasted in butter, lemon and green herbs, accompanied by warm bread and several sharp sauces. Tradition dictates that each diner feeds the person seated opposite them by hand; attempting to eat your own portion is considered both unlucky and extremely poor form.

Encounters

The Silver Fish attracts wealthy merchants, senior guild figures, diplomats, celebrated adventurers and diners prepared to spend heavily for some of the finest seafood in Aranthaes. Beneath the chandeliers, deals are made, reputations are tested and the traditional white fish platter causes almost as much drama as the wine. Roll d10 for possible encounters…

  1. A visiting merchant has ordered the traditional white fish sharing platter without knowing the custom. Their horrified expression when the server explains the hand-feeding tradition is matched only by the delight of their Aranthaen host.
  2. Fenton himself emerges from the kitchens carrying a fish he has just rejected from a delivery. He loudly informs the supplier, several diners and apparently Lady Bune herself why it is unacceptable before ordering it removed from his sight.
  3. A wealthy couple celebrating an anniversary have reached the white fish course and are feeding one another with such exaggerated tenderness that diners at neighbouring tables are beginning to lose their appetites.
  4. A fishing captain is quietly drinking with one of the restaurant’s buyers after delivering an unusually rare catch. Their conversation suggests something else came up in the nets with it, and neither seems entirely sure what to do next.
  5. A senior guild official has invited three rivals to dinner in one of the screened alcoves. The meal is outwardly cordial, but each new bottle of wine appears to make the discussion less diplomatic.
  6. A server presents a whole fish at the table for approval, only for an elderly diner to identify it confidently as something completely different. Fenton is summoned, and within minutes half the dining room is following the resulting argument.
  7. A successful adventuring party has decided to celebrate by ordering the Grand Seafood Board, several bottles of sparkling wine and almost everything else they liked the sound of. Their increasingly loud account of the expedition has attracted the attention of someone at the next table who recognises the location they are describing.
  8. A foreign dignitary has misunderstood the white fish tradition and begins feeding the wrong person across an adjoining table. Everyone involved is far too polite to stop immediately, creating several extraordinarily uncomfortable seconds.
  9. A beautifully dressed woman dining alone receives a small folded note between courses. She reads it once, drops it into a candle flame and continues eating as though nothing happened. Moments later, two men at another table quietly leave.
  10. Orilia Thorne is dining with Sirtanne at one of the better tables, with Orilia immaculate as ever and Sirtanne looking every inch the quietly competent assistant beside her. Between courses they speak easily, sharing the traditional white fish platter, while Sirtanne seems to notice every arrival, departure and whispered conversation in the room.
